1st Medieval Rose Faire of Rhodes

For the first time on the island of Rhodes, a debut Medieval Faire took place on the 26th of February, organized by the cultural association named the “Medieval Rose”, supported by the Municipality of Rhodes and The Prefecture of Dodecanese.

The program of the faire included events like the Witches and Fairies Dance, the Fire Eater, Songs and Music from the Middle Ages, Jugglers and Jesters, Knights on Horses and a Theatrical Performance for Children, referring to the siege of Medieval Rhodes by the Turks, which took place at St. George’s Inn. The fire torches and the fog (special effect) created a mysterious atmosphere while medieval pies and wine were offered to the public.

The unique natural setting of the Medieval Town of Rhodes – a Monument of Cultural and Architectural Heritage of the World (UNESCO 1992) – was ideal for the excitation of the imagination of thousands of spectators who visited the Medieval Fountain Square, where most of the events took place.

This first experience of the Medieval Reenactments impressed those who where present at the “magical trip” to the legendary medieval period and constitutes a preamble of the 1st Medieval Rose Festival which will take place on the Isle of the Knights (Rhodes), in April 2007, and will be the first ever of its kind in Greece.

More than 75 Volunteers worked for the First Medieval Rose Faire, including students of the University of the Aegean (witches) and the Advanced School of Tourist Education of Rhodos, Teachers, the Town Choir, Members of the Greek Rescue Team (knights), the Good Samaritans and many others.
